The Story of Adam (Peace be upon him)
In-depth story of Adam (verses taken from the Holy Quran; translation: Tafseer Ibn Kathir)
Allah the Exalted has mentioned the incident of Prophet Adam in the following chapters and verses of the Holy Quran;
- Creation of the first human “Adam”
(Chapter 2, Surah Al Baqara,verse 30)
And remember when your Lord said to the angels, “Verily, I am going to place (mankind) generations after generations on earth.” They said: “Will You place therein those who will make mischief therein and shed blood, while we glorify You with praises and thanks and sanctify You.” He (Allah) said: “I know that which you do not know.” (Chapter 2, Surah Al Baqara, verse 30)
- Knowledge given to Adam.
(Chapter 2, Surah Al Baqara,verse 31-33)
- And He (Allah) taught Adam all the names (of everything), then He showed them to the angels and said, “Tell Me the names of these if you are truthful.” 32. They (angels) said: “Glory is to You, we have no knowledge except what you have taught us. Verily, You are the Knower, the Wise.” 33. He said: “O Adam! Inform them of their names,” and when he had informed them of their names, He said: “Did I not tell you that I know the Ghayb (unseen) in the heavens and the earth, and I know what you reveal and what you have been concealing.”(Chapter 2, Surah Al Baqara, verse 31-33)
- Allah ordered angels and the Jin (Iblis) to prostrate before Adam
(Chapter 2, Surah Al Baqara,verse 34)
- And (remember) when Allah said to the angels (made of light): “Prostrate yourselves before Adam.” And they prostrated except Iblis (Shaytan, made of fire), he refused, was proud and was one of the disbelievers (disobedient to Allah)”. (Chapter 2, Surah Al Baqara, verse 34)
- The Jin (Iblis) was made from fire, whereas Adam was made from clay
(Chapter 7, surah Aaraaf, verse 11-12)
Surely Allah created you, then shaped you, then said to the angels, “Prostrate before Adam,” so they all did—but not Iblîs (Shaytaan), who refused to prostrate with the others.Allah asked, “What prevented you from prostrating when I commanded you?” He replied, “I am better than he (Adam) is: You (Allah) created me(Iblis/shaytaan) from fire and him (Adam) from clay.”(Chapter 7, surah Aaraaf, verse 11-12)
- Iblis disobeyed the order of Allah
(Chapter 15, surah Al Hijr,verse 28-33)
- And (remember) when your Lord said to the angels: “I am going to create a man (Adam) from dried (sounding) clay of altered mud. ” 29.“So, when I have fashioned him completely and breathed into him (Adam) of My spirit (the soul which I created for him,) then fall down, prostrating yourselves before him.” 30. So the angels prostrated themselves, all of them together. 31. Except Iblis (Shaytan) – he refused to be among the prostrate. 32. (Allah said: “O Iblis! What is your reason for not being among the prostrate” 33. Iblis ﴾said: “I am not one to prostrate myself to a human, whom You created from dried (sounding) clay of altered mud.” (Chapter 15, surah Al Hijr, verse 28-33)
- Allah will reward those who have God consciousness and punish those who transgresses
(Chapter 15, surah Al Hijr,verse 34-50)
- (Allah) said: “Then leave, for verily, you (iblis) are an outcast. ” 35.“And verily, the curse shall be upon you until the Day of Recompense.” 36. ﴿Iblis﴾said: “O my Lord! Then give me respite until the Day they (the dead) will be resurrected.” 37. Allah said: “Then verily, you are of those reprieved,” 38. “Until the Day of the time appointed.”” (Chapter 15, surah Al Hijr, verse 34-38)
- Iblis ﴾said: “O my Lord! Because You misled me, I shall indeed adorn the path of error for them (mankind) on the earth, and I shall mislead them all.” 40.“Except Your chosen (guided) servants among them.” 41. (Allah) said: “This is the way which will lead straight to Me.” 42. “Certainly, you shall have no authority over My servants, except those of the astray who follow you.” 43. And surely, Hell is the place promised for them all. 44. It has seven gates, for each of those gates is a class assigned. (Chapter 15, surah Al Hijr, verse 39-44)
- Truly, those who have Taqwa (consciousness of the Almighty one God), will dwell in Gardens and water springs. 46.(It will be said to them): “Enter it in peace and security.” 47. And We shall remove any deep feeling of bitterness from their breasts. (So they will be like) brothers facing each other on thrones. 48. No sense of fatigue shall touch them, nor shall they be asked to leave it. 49. Declare to My servants that I am truly the Forgiving, the Most Merciful. 50. And that My torment is indeed the most painful torment. (Chapter 15, surah Al Hijr, verse 45-50)
- Taqwa (God consciousness)
(Chapter 04, surah Al Nisa,verse 01)
O mankind! Have Taqwa (consciousness of the Almighty one God), of your Lord, Who created you from a single person, and from him He created his mate, and from them both He created many men and women, and have Taqwa of Allah through Whom you demand your mutual (rights), and revere the wombs. Surely, Allah is always watching over you. (Chapter 04, surah Al Nisa, verse 01)
- The Creator (Allah) who created the Humans and the universe and we Humans and the universe are the creations of the Creator (Allah)
(Chapter 07, surah Al Aaraaf verse 189-190)
“He is the One Who created you from a single soul, then from it made its spouse so he may find comfort in her. After he had been united with her, she carried a light burden that developed gradually. When it grew heavy, they prayed to Allah, their Lord, “If you grant us good offspring, we will certainly be grateful.” (Chapter 07, surah Al Aaraaf verse 189)
“But when He granted their descendants good offspring, they associated false gods in what He has given them. Exalted is Allah above what they associate with Him”! (Chapter 07, surah Al Aaraaf verse 190)
- All Mankind are the Offspring of Adam
(Chapter 49, surah Al Hujurat verse 13)
Allah states that He has created all mankind from Adam, peace be upon him, and from Adam, He created his wife, Hawwa’ and from them, people started to spread.
“O humanity! Indeed, We created you from a male and a female, and made you into peoples and tribes so that you may get to know one another. Surely the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous among you. Allah is truly All-Knowing, All-Aware. (Chapter 49, surah Al Hujurat verse 13)
- Adam and Hawwa/Eve slipped away from Paradise
(Chapter 02, surah Al Baqara verse 35-37)
- And We said: “O Adam! Dwell you and your wife in the Paradise and eat both of you freely with pleasure and delight, of things therein wherever you will, but come not near this tree or you both will be of the Zalimin (wrongdoers). ” 36.Then the Shaytan made them slip therefrom (the Paradise), and got them out from that in which they were. We said: “Get you down, all, with enmity between yourselves. On earth will be a dwelling place for you and an enjoyment for a time.”(Chapter 02, surah Al Baqara verse 35-36)
- Then Adam received from his Lord (Allah) Words. And his Lord (Allah) pardoned him (accepted his repentance). Verily, He is the One Who forgives (accepts repentance), the Most Merciful. (Chapter 02, surah Al Baqara verse 37)
(Chapter 20, surah Al Taaha verse 115-125)
(115) And We had already taken a promise from Adam before, but he forgot; and We found not in him determination.
(116) And [mention] when We said to the angels, “Prostrate to Adam,” and they prostrated, except Iblees; he refused.
(117) So We said, “O Adam, indeed this is an enemy to you and to your wife. Then let him not remove you from Paradise so you would suffer.
(118) Indeed, it is [promised] for you not to be hungry therein or be unclothed.
(119) And indeed, you will not be thirsty therein or be hot from the sun.”
(120) Then Satan whispered to him; he said, “O Adam, shall I direct you to the tree of eternity and possession that will not deteriorate?”
(121) And Adam and his wife ate of it, and their private parts became apparent to them, and they began to fasten over themselves from the leaves of Paradise. And Adam disobeyed his Lord and erred.
(122) Then his Lord chose him and turned to him in forgiveness, and guided [him].
(123) [Allah] said, “Descend from Paradise – all, [your descendants] being enemies to one another. And if there should come to you guidance from Me – then whoever follows My guidance will neither go astray [in the world] nor suffer [in the Hereafter].
(124) And whoever turns away from My remembrance – indeed, he will have a depressed life, and We will gather him on the Day of Resurrection blind.”
(125) He will say, “My Lord, why have you raised me blind while I was [once] seeing?”(Chapter 20, surah Al Taaha verse 115-125)
- Believe in the Signs of the Lord
(Chapter 20, surah Al Taaha verse 126-128)
(126) [Allah] will say, “Thus did Our signs come to you, and you forgot them; and thus will you this Day be forgotten.”
(127) And thus do Allah recompense he who transgressed and did not believe in the signs of his Lord. And the punishment of the Hereafter is more severe and more enduring.
(128) Then, has it not become clear to them how many generations We (Allah) destroyed before them as they walk among their dwellings? Indeed in that are signs for those of intelligence. (Chapter 20, surah Al Taaha verse 126-128)
- Adam and Eve were Forgiven
(Chapter 07, surah Al Aaraf verse 23-29)
(23) They (Adam and Hawwa/Eve ) said, “Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves, and if You do not forgive us and have mercy upon us, we will surely be among the losers.”
(24) [Allah] said, “Descend, being to one another enemies. And for you on the earth is a place of settlement and enjoyment for a time.”
(25) He said, “Therein you will live, and therein you will die, and from it you will be brought forth.”
(26) O children of Adam, We have bestowed upon you clothing to conceal your private parts and as adornment. But the clothing of righteousness – that is best. That is from the signs of Allah that perhaps they will remember.
(27) O children of Adam, let not Satan tempt you as he removed your parents from Paradise, stripping them of their clothing to show them their private parts. Indeed, he sees you, he and his tribe, from where you do not see them. Indeed, We have made the devils allies with those who do not believe.
(28) And when they commit immorality, they say, “We found our fathers doing it, and Allah has ordered us to do it.” Say, “Indeed, Allah does not order immorality. Do you say about Allah that which you do not know?”
(29) Say, [O Muhammad], “My Lord has ordered justice and that you maintain yourselves [in worship of Him] at every place [or time] of prostration, and invoke Him, sincere to Him in religion.” Just as He originated you, you will return [to life].
(Chapter 07, surah Al Aaraf verse 23-29)
